Dr. Sheila D. Thompson has experienced diverse professional
consulting opportunities including those with the National
Science Foundation (NSF); the U.S. Department of Education Office of
Educational Research & Improvement (OERI) - National Institute
on Student Achievement, Curriculum, and Assessment and the National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES); the General Educational
Development (GED) Testing Service of the American Council on
Education; Metis Associates; A Better Chance, Inc.; and Human
Resource Research Organization (HumRRO). Extensive
experience has also been gained through employment as the
Director of Evaluation and as a Senior Research Associate at the
Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk
(CRESPAR) housed at Howard University; the Maryland State Department
of Education (Division of Planning, Results, and Information
Management); the District of Columbia Public Schools (Division of
Quality Assurance and the District Facilitator Project); A Better
Chance, Inc.; the University of Maryland at Baltimore; and Research
& Evaluation Associates, Inc.
Dr. Thompson
holds membership in
the American Educational Research Association (Division H - School
Evaluation & Program Development) and the Special Interest Group
Research Focus on Black Education; as well as
with the American Evaluation Association. Dr. Thompson is a former Chair of
the Minority Issues and Testing Committee of the National Council
on Measurement in Education (NCME). She also served two
years as a member of the Design and Analysis Committee (DAC)
for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
for the U.S. Department of Education.
Committed
to community service, Dr. Thompson serves as Secretary of
the Board of Directors of Children's Choice, Inc.; is a member
of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (current member of Prince George's County
Alumnae Chapter; former Chair of the Program Planning Task Force of
the Eastern Region; Charter Member and Past President of North Arundel
County Alumnae Chapter); and served on the Board of Directors for
Neighbor Ride, Inc. Dr. Thompson also, serves a member of the
Board of Stewards and is Commissioner of Christian Education at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church
(Glenn Dale, MD). Additionally, she is an inaugural inductee of the
Morgan State University Psychology Department Hall of Fame and
participated as a pre-doctoral fellow in the Summer Fellowship Program in
Research for Graduate Students at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in
Princeton, New Jersey. She is listed in Outstanding Young Women of America
and has been inducted into Promethean Kappa Tau and Psi Chi Honor
Societies.
Dr. Thompson received the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree
in Psychology from Morgan State University (Baltimore, MD);
the Masters of Arts (M.A.) degree in Educational Psychology
from Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI); and the
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Howard University
(Washington, DC) in Educational Psychology with a specialization
in research methodology and evaluation.
